In 2021, 4 states (New York, Virginia, New Mexico, and Connecticut) passed legislation to legalize marijuana for recreational purposes. Meanwhile, Alabama’s legislature and governor legalized medical cannabis this year, and Louisiana decriminalized possession of up to 14 grams.
There are now 19 states, plus the District of Columbia, that have legalized the recreational use of marijuana. (June 2021)
Other states considered legislation to legalize recreational marijuana this year:
- Legislation is pending in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin.
- Florida, Hawaii, Minnesota, Nebraska, and North Dakota considered, but have not passed, legislation to legalize marijuana this year.
