Intro.
The cannabis packaging requirements have been stricter since the Vermont Cannabis Control Board (CBB) considered sustainable packaging rules during their meeting on Jan. 27, 2022. The CBB even presented new packaging guidance to curb plastic-using activities and reduce plastic pollution.
Here we offer four sustainable packaging solutions to the Vermont cannabis business, based on the 2022 GUIDANCE ON PACKAGING.
“GUIDANCE ON PACKAGING” (JULY 2022)
To create your brand packaging in Vermont or any other cannabis-available state, the Board’s requirements for materials might always be part of the problem. This is why we should go over these newly introduced rules first.
The general rules are as follows:
- In general, packaging that is intended for consumer purchase at a retail location shall be reusable and shall not be plastic. Examples of reusable, non-plastic packaging materials include glass, tin, cardboard, and bamboo.
This rule does not apply to packaging used solely for the transfer of cannabis or cannabis products between licensees.
2. Consumer packaging for cannabis must be child-deterrent.
3. Consumer packaging for cannabis products must be opaque and child-resistant.
4. Packages and containers that hold cannabis and cannabis products must protect those items from contamination and must not expose the cannabis and cannabis products to any toxic or harmful substance.
It’s not easy for all cannabis brand owners to find a stable supply chain of legal & practical packaging under the strict ban on using plastic without a state-issued waiver.
Cannabis flower products and concentrates might use heavy glass jars or tin pots as plastic alternatives.
However, cannabis-infused edibles such as chocolate bars, cookies, gummies, and candies still need other available packaging solutions that are lighter and cheaper.
So, what packaging material to use for your edibles under the Vermont GUIDANCE ON PACKAGING (2022)? Our sustainable packaging is currently popular in multiple USA cannabis markets, and we will be continually considering the packaging rules as well as our customer’s packaging needs.

Back-lock Box
Two-tab Box
Besides those two paper boxes, we offer two more tin packaging options for the Vermont cannabis business.
Non-plastic Tin Packaging: Two Options
Square Tin Container
- Food-grade tin container perfect for cannabis edibles, mints, gummies, and pre-roll joints
- Child-resistant slide-out design
- Vintage square tin packaging
- Reusable and recyclable
Rounded Tin Container
- Round tin tube with a child-resistant cap

- Food-safe tin container that best fits smaller cannabis products including mints, gummies, and single pre-roll
The market is now really crying for highly sustainable cannabis packaging solutions. Good paper/tin packaging saves money, creates profit, and reaches a consensus with States’ Cannabis Packaging Rules: plastic-free, recyclable, and fully compostable.
Your customers and products deserve better. And you do too.
By converting to developing more eco-friendly packaging, we plan to make more all-paper-made box types to accommodate more cannabis product categories.
